I don't understand why you need to do this.

When in X, CTRL ALT F8 should switch you back to the console that X is running
on. (You will see the cursor but no shell prompt - X is still running!)

You can then use ALT F1 to F6, to switch to another virtual console to login
on. To get back to X do ALT F8 (or maybe F7 - dont remember for sure).
