press Strg+Ctrl+F1 to get text login
press Strg+Ctrl+F7 to get gui
open from gui a terminal and enter: 
$ init 3
which switches to "NO GUI". "$" is the prompt.
enter:
$ init 5
to get X running again.
finaly look in /etc/inittab to see the init-modes.
finaly: this is same in all linux distributions I know.
