The new video card is probably not compatible with this old version of 
Linux.  What kind of card do you have?

Create a backup of your X files, found in /etc/X11/XF86Config*, and then 
run `Xconfigurator --preferxf4`.  It will try to probe the card and pick 
the best driver.  If that still doesn't work, you may need a newer 
version of XFree86 (which comes with newer versions of Linux).
