what is the (apparent) problem with xine?

  i see nothing at bugzilla describing this, but the vast
majority of mpeg files i try to view with xine-0.9.9-6
(what came with the null beta) generate an error dialog
reading:

   - xine engine error -

demuxer failed.  Maybe 'blah.mpg' is a broken file?

  even fairly trivial mpeg files from mpeg.org, even when they
play, can briefly display this dialog.  

  have i missed some config step?
