I don't think that's quite what he said he was trying to do. However, I'd 
cheerfully disable the Promise RAID and do my RAID in Linux.

from reports I've read, Linux does it faster. Also, you don't have to use the 
RAID IDE ports at all.

Presumably at some time in the future (maybe more BIOS upgrades) they will get 
along better with Linux (perhaps after the kernel hackers have had more time 
to work on it).
