My answer to the problem was to buy an external card reader (Uno Card
Reader advertise linux support)... Cost about 20 GBP. I've not had to
worry about Linux support for my Camera (Canon Powershot A20). 

I pop out the CompactFlash into the reader and it's just a case of
mount -tvfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash
cp /mnt/flash/* /dev/null

The 8Mb internal memory may be useless - but I've found some cameras
ignore the internal memory if it has SM/CF installed. You may find it
impossible to take off the internal memory but should have no problems
with the SmartMedia and an external reader.
