So the kernel doesn't see a partition table on the device.
That's why sda1 or sda2 doesn't work.

Not sure why /dev/sda  doesn't work then.

How does WinXP access it?
What device does it think it is?

How did you configure it in vmware?

It almost sounds like a custom filesystem.
Did you install drivers for it in XP?
