RE: possible gnome-terminal/vte DoS?

well wouldnt think to check bash's man page if the file in question is
actually owned by the pam package...that's just not a logical place to
search for documentation.  So I guess the rule of thumb is when in doubt
read bash's manpage?  

Conf files are only self-documenting to a point and a quick reading
limits.conf...its not clear that its part of pam...so its really not
clear from the comments in the example file what subsystem really uses
this file...and where to look for english sentences and explanations. 
Not everyone can parse sparse reference comments in conf file examples
and wrap their heads around what's going on.  I wouldn't call the
comments in limits.conf documentation...more like notes...
