here's the result of trying that.

[gerry@gstpc gerry]$ mount /mnt/smedia
mount: block device /dev/sda1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
[gerry@gstpc gerry]$ eject /dev/sda
eject: unable to find or open device for: `/dev/sda'
