The X server pretty much gets blamed for all application resource 
leaks, because the applications X resources are stored in the X 
server itself.  So for example, of Mozilla allocates 30 huge 
pixmaps, then leaves them there and forgets about them, this will 
show up as the X server getting bigger and bigger, when in fact, 
it is a bug in Mozilla.

XFree86 4.3.0 will have the Xres extension which allows one to 
view the X server resources per client.
