rpmbuild --rebuild ends up in /i386 on ahtlon SMP

when i rebuild from source, my RPMs always end up in /i386 and are named 
i386, even though i'm on an 2-way athlon.  is this a quirk of null or am 
i doing something wrong?  are my packages then not being optimized for 
my processor?
