I guess the most probable candidate then is KDE since it's also done it.

I've tried to recover by closing stuff, but it seems to be a runaway thing, 
and once it starts there's no recovery except perhaps for logging out. I 
think I have got down to just having a few konsoles running and still the 
problem blowing out untill X (using the name loosely here) crashes and I get 
back to KDM.
