Promise PDC20276 RAID Question

I'm still confused about how to get the Promise PDC20276 RAID controller 
to work in 'null' on my Asus P4T533 motherboard. Much of this stems from 
my own misunderstanding of how to do RAID and also how to utilize the 
Promise RAID connectors.

I thought that to make a RAID array I can plug one drive into the plain 
old IDE0 connector on the motherboard and the second drive into the 
Promise IDE RAID connector. Apparently I'm wrong. I need both drives 
plugged into separate IDE RAID connectors for them to constitute a RAID 
array. Comments, anyone?

The PDC20276 needs proprietary drivers. Those drivers don't exist for 
Red Hat versions newer than 7.2. So they won't work for Red Hat 7.3 or 
NULL. Am I correct about that?

I can't seem to get 'null' to even see the hard drive plugged into the 
primary RAID IDE connector. However, the Promise web site's 'ASIC 
Solution [PDC20276]' page says 'The Slave Channel HDD of Promise ATA 
RAID are to be as ATA HDD." So that sounds like I can plug a second 
drive into the slave connector of the primary  and it will be recognized 
as a hard disk device? Then from there I can use software RAID on the 
second drive, even though my primary drive is still plugged into a 
regular motherboard IDE connector?
