I don't think those high numbers actually reflect much delivered performance. 
The most important number is the sustained delivery speed, off the surface.

I have a 5400 RPM drive that tests faster (hdparm) than a newer 7200 rpm 
drive. Reason? More data per track.

Note too that the amount of data/track varies across the disk surface - more 
sectors/track on the outside. I was readin up on this recently, and the 
subject drive had something like 13 zones with tracks of varying size.

Reminds me of floppies on the Rainbow.
