I am also a long time KDE user. I think I can live with just about anything, but it's good to have a consistency. I used to be an fvwm user and when fvwm (one) is taken off of Redhat, I have to use something else because my old .fvwmrc would work with fvwm2. I hope my personal kde settings would work just fine without much tweaking when I upgraded my 7.3 to 8.0. I wouldn't be happy learning new desktop behavior, key bindings, etc. I remember when I had to deal with a shortcut that means save and exit on one app, and force kill terminal on the other. I lost some unsaved codes. Not fun. Wow, that magic 8-ball knows everything!
