Okay,

I used KDE, I've even sent patches to developers,
helped with documentation, filed bug reports, provided
tech support, and from time to time I am even a KDE
advocate.

I am running Null/Rawhide right now (as in I've
grabbed a bunch of stuff off of Rawhide directories
that are newer than found in Null). I ran limbo.
I've even had a box set up with Vahalla.

Redhat has historically been a Gnome based
distribution, but KDE by many accounts makes up the
bulk of Gnu/Linux desktops (strange considering Redhat
is the primary distribution in North America).

Limbo contained things that as not only a KDE user,
but sometimes developer were offensive. The most
significant was the removal of the "About KDE" option
under "Help" in KDE applications. This created the
impression that Redhat was attempting to remove one of
the primary modes of new user exposure to the KDE
community that exists. Furthermore, the choice of not
installing Konqueror and K-Mail by default, which are
both KDE core applications and are quite mature, was
considered bad form, esp. to replace them with there
Gnome alternatives. The list continues, but the rest
are less significant.

Null, for me anyway, returned the "About KDE" option,
but Konqueror and K-Mail were still non-standard apps,
and I expect in Psyche they will be as well (pains in
the unification process I suppose). So its give and
take. Vfolder still does not operate correctly for me
in KDE. After installing Null I have run an Up2date
and actually had Konqueror and Konsole in KDE break,
as Konqueror can no longer browse Ftp directories and
Konsole has major text formatting problems. I have
filed such bugs with Redhat, but they are not assigned
as of now.

Apparently Bero was not able to maintain the
assignment of new bugs near the end of the development
process as a majority of filed KDE bugs are NEW and
not assigned. I'm sure many of those are duplicates
that have been resolved in the final version.
However, while KDE is operational, and I have few
complaints once I understood how to undo many aspects
of Redhat, it is far from where SuSE tends to get KDE.

That should be expected though because the Gnome
implementation in SuSE falters much like this KDE
experience as it is not where they put their
resources.

All in all though Psyche will be an excellent
distribution from what I have seen and I want to
congratulate Redhat developers on their hard work,
they have done a suberb job. I am interested to see
if their new GUI sysadmin tools will be fleshed out in
future releases and integrated like Mandrake Control
Center or Yast.

I am sorry to see Bero leave Redhat, as often it is
good to have someone play devil's advocate, and he
seems to have felt the impressions of the KDE
community more than many at Redhat. Good luck Bero,
I'm sure there are a great many opportunities for you
to continue your contributions and encourage you to do
so.

I apologize for the length of this e-mail.

Nate
