In KDE the big reason I liked it over GNOME (not big in reality), was the layout of the minimize, maximize, close buttons. In GNOME I didn't like the placement of the close button in the top left. Now with Metacity, this is no longer the case. I guess after being exposed to Windows 3.11, 95, 98 and upwards, I got used to it all being in the top right. I've been programmed to Microsoft to like it that way unfortunately... ;-)
KDE does have a look that is 'nice'. Some might say cartoonish, but it is nice. Mac OS X is also nice, and has a semi-cartoonish feel itself. Maybe on some level that's what I like about it, the 'bubbly' feel to the icons and widgets. GNOME certainly feels more hackerish and 'administrative' which is cool in its own right too.
But what do I know? ;-)
