I've been told by someone I trust who is at or was at the periphery of
gnome's inner circle that there is a gnome library for printing that is
suppose to have this kind of capability...that we all so want to see in
everything gui....but that the library hasn't seen much work of late and
sees very little use by applications

I really hope gnome comes back and focuses on building a mature printing
dialog that can get access to ppd features.  But i will definitely give
a point to KDE here....the enduser printing functionality is better by
far....unless I'm totally overlooking something in gnome that I don't
know how to get access to.
