Actually, I consider it pretty much stupid, braindead and retarded to
keep such a destructive button (close) in a series of small buttons
displayed all together and on the same side of the window.

In my wm (sawfish), I'm running a theme called absolute-darkness.
The window layout is:

.[min][max][menu][  Title   ][close]_________________.
|                                                    |

It could/should be improved to (so close is always where you expect):

.[min][max][menu][           Title           ][close].
|                                                    |

Plus, max has some pretty quircks:
  (un)maximize vertically on middle mouse button click
  (un)maximize horizontally on right mouse button click

This is a lot more sane than the MS Windows style.

Totally different from what the common guy is used to? Absolutely.
More usable? Yes.
Safer? Yes.

Why mimic what's bad?
