Yes, I overwrote everything the archives contained by using mc.
Additionally I tried to do an rpm --rebuilddb which also segfaulted;
maybe this did further harm, or I did something else wrong.

What (still) happens:

[root@lx root]# rpm -Uvh *.rpm --oldpackage
Warnung: popt-1.8-0.70.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 897da07a
Speicherzugriffsfehler

The rpm packages are from http://phoebe3.fedora.us/apt/RPMS.updates/:

   rpm-build-4.2-0.70.i386.rpm          07-Mar-2003 13:31   431k
   rpm-debuginfo-4.2-0.70.i386.rpm      07-Mar-2003 13:31   9.3M
   rpm-devel-4.2-0.70.i386.rpm          07-Mar-2003 13:31   1.0M
   rpm-python-4.2-0.70.i386.rpm         07-Mar-2003 13:31    86k
