I think what you're missing at this point is the "module-init tools" which can be gotten from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/rusty/modules/ (hmm, they're at 0.9.11 now - I need to upgrade) You have to install those, and be sure to generate a "modprobe.conf" file since the new tools don't use modules.conf - I've found the 2.5 kernel to have a really nice smooth feel on the desktop, and stays smooth under conditions that bring 2.4 to its knees...
