I use pine, evolution, mozilla, and squirrelmail completely interchangeably thanks to IMAP. For the best "politeness" in sharing though, you'll need a backend format other than the default *nix "mbox" format. I use the MBX format that's provided by UW in the UW-IMAP suite, but I think Maildir is another good alternative.
