The Red Hat version uses /usr or /, I don't have the SRPM handy to check which. What addons are you enabling? You really should get the rpm. Boot in rescue mode, mount your filesystem under /mntsysimage if recue doesn't. Then use rpm -Uvh --oldpackage --root=/mnt/sysimage <correct glibc rpms> Make sure you use i686 version of glibc, if you have i686 or better.
