Variables in sed command?

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the syntax of a sed command. I am writing a script to delete virtual hosts from the Apache config file. I know that the following command works. sed -e '1108,1116d' /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf > /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.tmp What I would like to do is replace 1108 and 1116 with the variables $startline and $endline, but I keep getting errors. I have tried sed -e '$startline,$endlined' /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf > /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.tmp sed -e '`echo $startline`,`echo $endlined`' /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf > /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.tmp However neither one worked.
