If you are looking at doing auto mounted home directories don't forget to look up autofs, exportfs and exports. Look at /etc/yp.conf, /etc/ypserv.conf, /var/yp/Makefile. Take a look at the init scripts ypbind, and ypserv. They will give you a lot of hints on where to look for stuff and what to look at.
