files on /var/spool/mqueue

I have a 512MB var filesystem.  and  a cron for 'cat
/dev/null>messages.[234]' but growing slowly.
I found houndreds of files on /var/spool/mqueue =20
don't know what they are 'coz I don't have printers
defined neither lpd system.

can i delete those files safely??
