You have a few options.  You could do a fresh install, or even an 
install over the top of the old one, choosing the X and GNOME packages, 
and not formatting your hard drive.  You could also register with 
up2date and get the new packages that way (`up2date gnome-libs 
gnome-core gnome-utils` should get you started).
