as soon as 7.1 is no longer supported, up2date will not work. as long as you have up2date and all latest patches, your system is as secure as you make it. you might want to try a product like bastille. http://www.bastille-linux.org/ it does a good job using standard security techniques to lock down a system and make it more secure.
