You may be able to boot into single user mode and/or append init=/bin/sh
to the lilo boot process* which will drop you to a prompt without requesting
a login.

*hit <shift> at the lilo prompt then type Linux init=/bin/sh

Once at the prompt, you should be able to rebuild your /etc/profile file.

In my opinion, you shouldn't use anything other than vi or emacs to edit
important conf files.
