We all agree that the memory stick would be mounted on /dev/sda1.
As far as I know they come already formatted as vfat complete with a
partition table.

All that is needed is mounting the /dev/sda as vfat on some directory.

If they are not formatted then all sorts of problems arise , zip drives
mount on /dev/sda4 and doing fsck /dev/sda may cause chaos.
mkfs would be a better approach.
