I don't know if this is good or bad, but I decided to run hwconfig --list before and 
after service xinetd stop. The 3,4, and 5 levels were on, and didn't change. In fact, 
there was no change in any of the on/off settings of xinetd.

Well, it's late here, and I'm turning in.
