I don't know if this will help, but I had a "drive detection failure" when  
I put a new drive in my system. I had to manually set the drive type and  
parameters in the bios.  After that, I was able to tell Linux about the  
drive.  This was an add-on drive to an already installed system.  Good  
luck.
