I think the modem is configured, because I can dial up. wvdial reports
the connection and the dynamic IP address assigned by my ISP when the
connection is made. I don't want anything to happen to my static IP nic
setup for the lan connection in the process of getting the TCP/IP over
modem working.

Ok, I tried what you said. It erased the other numbers I had in my
wvdial.conf file. I don't know if it had any other side effects.

I got (and was getting) a dynamic IP address from my ISP when wvdial
connected.
I could ping that IP adddress, but I could not ping the other IP address
mentioned, nor could I ping my ISP by using the domain name.

Here's the result of running wvdial:

ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT4433399
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT4433399
CONNECT 115200
--> Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.

Ok, now I switch to another terminal.
I can ping 63.246.194.110, but I can't ping 63.246.194.250; it just hangs.

Here's the message log for the period
