SLOW syslog() function

See the following test program, enclosed below, which writes 500 lines of 
data to the syslog.

Test results:
No other writes to syslog while these tests ran.

Running on Solaris (Netra X1):
Spent 321 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 299 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 262 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 248 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 240 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 194 ms writing to syslog.

Running on RHEL3:
Spent 1308 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 1373 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 1348 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 1420 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 1407 ms writing to syslog.
Spent 1447 ms writing to syslog.

Any idea of what can be done to increase syslog write performance?
