STT3401A Tape Drive Input/Output Error

I have a RHEL3 U7 server and we just installed a new tape drive in it.
It's the Seagate STT3401A tape drive and now amanda backup doesn't
seem to want to back up to it properly.

Any commands I try on the box gives me an input/output error. I've
googled and I found this snippet from the 2.6 kernel something or
other, and I was hoping that someone might know what it means.

I'm not sure if that means that it was already compiled with the
longer wait time, or whether it needs to be. I'm wondering if I need
to roll my own kernel for this box with that adjustment?

Does anyone else have a Seagate STT3401A tape drive (the ide model)
that they are using with RHEL3 U7? Even using mt commands like mt -f
/dev/ht0 retension spits out the error.
