Basically the system is looking for a drive to connect to but can't find it:

USB
Firewire
Networked Attach Storage (NFS, CIFS, etc)

If at one point one of these was connected and nautilus had it opened
in its Desktop it might be trying to purge/check on those. I don't
have an RHEL-3 system readily available to check this out at the
moment though. What happens if you do the following:

login on console (tty0)
mv .nautilus .nautilus.broke
login into gdm
