One solution (if anyone else is seeing this behavior) is to move the
/etc/init.d/autofs initscript and replace it with the
/etc/init.d/autofs.rpmsave one, then restart autofs.  This is obviously
not a desirable long-term solution, but it works to get systems back on
their feet.
