I believe the CentOS plus kernel has firewire enabled.  You can grab the 
RPM or SRPM from:

http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/

and use that.  You will of course be forfeiting  your  RHEL4 support  as 
long as your using that kernel but that's going to be the case however 
you add firewire support...
