You are right. Up to 6GB SWAP (on a 16GB RAM system), the machine never
hangs and always generates an OOM kill upon memory exhaustion. However,
we need large SWAP as most of our tools (EDA) are memory hungry.

We see this problem primarily on 64-bit but at times on 32 bit as well. 

Question: /etc/security/limits.conf allows setting max resident set
size. Is there a way to limit based on the total virtual size? Ours is a
typical large R&D environment so cannot set limits based on users or
process names.
