I have an older box running RHEL 3 which has trouble finding its
ethernet interface after installing new kernels.  Some kind of horrible
conflict between a built-in nForce chipset we aren't using, and an
PCI slot intel e100 we are using.

Removing /etc/sysconfig/hwconf and rebooting causes kudzu to re-enumerate
the hardware, and that usually fixes it for me.
