RE: Is upgrading the kernel necessary

Yes, just update those that you have installed.  By default, up2date
does not replace the kernel, rather it simply installs the new one
alongside, and modifies grub.conf to use that kernel as the default.  In
order to roll back to the old kernel if necessary, you could either boot
into it via the grub menu (if it's just for one time), or change the
default to it in grub.conf.

The HP DL380 system currently has the following kernel packages
installed:-

[root]# rpm -qa | grep -i kernel
kernel-utils-2.4-8.37
kernel-2.4.21-4.EL
kernel-source-2.4.21-4.EL
kernel-smp-2.4.21-4.EL
kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-13


I have registred the system with RHN. 

So I should only upgrade the kernel packages currently installed on my
system?

Do I need to modify the grub.conf file after upgrading the kernel?

Also by upgrading the kernel will I be able to revert back to the
previous version of the kernel and if so I how would I do that?
