The problem of old software on new hardware can be finessed with
Xen, can't it?  Try installing a Redhat 5.2 Xen hypervisor in
Dom0 and than install a Redhat 3 Xen virtual guest.  That way,
the hypervisor is between your legacy application and the
actual hardware.  I think Redhat even has paravirtualized
RHEL 3 kernels to maximize the performance.

Note that inserting a hypervisor make make applications run
either faster, a little slower, or a lot slower, depending
on exactly what memory, disk, and network I/O access patterns
they have, what kind of virtualization you are using, and
what kind of hardware assists your CPU's provide.  Slightly
slower is typical (5%-15%).
