Watching avi's in Linux 7.3

Greetings,

I would like to ask if anyone has figured out how to
watch avi's in Linux 7.3 and avoid the problems with
the system completely freezing up at which point the
keyboard does not respond as well. Also any additional
information on fine tuning 7.3 for media performance
will be much appreciated.
