 Dear Dan, fear not all is not necessarily lost, especially if we are
 talking about a RedHat LINUX server
What you need to do is when the shell drops you into maintenance
mode, run the following command.
<e2fsck -cfpvy /dev/hdb1>   This should fix any bad sectors on this
file system. Please note that you never
want to perform an fsck command on a mounted file system. In your
case, it's not mounted, so it's safe and
this has been successful for me many times. If you have another
computer with the same o.s., you can look
at the man page for fsck to see what these options do.
