Sorry, I can't offer advice that is certain to work.  Since the various
tomcat RPMs include in jar form all the code, it should be possible
to start tomcat with a standard JVM, once you compute an appropriate
CLASSPATH, main() entry point, and arguments.  We do not include the
original tomcat startup/shutdown shell scripts; you may have luck with
them straight from <http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/>.

Have you considered instead using the tomcat installation merged into
the jonas RPM?  The configuration file layout is indeed different, but
at least that one is meant to run via an ordinary JVM.
