let me rephrase that. 
RH gives you lots of choices *by default*. it doesn't require you to know
that there is an image editor called 'gimp' nor that the scanner software is
called 'sane'.

Lean debian installs do require you to know the names of the packages. 
I don't know what debian default desktop systems are like; I've never built
one.
