dunno about Radeon 9700s, but....

I've seen an nVidia card going over 4000fps running 'glxgears', while the
fastest I've seen from an ATI card is ~2500fps.
glxgears is sort of the basic benchmarking tool that the XFree86 DRI guys
use to see how fast something is running... but I suspect it's a pretty bad
benchmark on the whole. (another case of lies, damn lies, and benchmarks).

so I wouldn't take that as an absolute; and I know that 'speed' is going to
be pretty application-specific (which is why projects like Chromium
[http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~humper/chromium_documentation/], and hardware
like SGI's, are used for some tasks instead of nVidia cards); but I'm still
willing to belive they're the fastest for playing Doom 3. :)

yes it is. here in Minnesota, we're fortunate enough to have Codeweavers'
corporate offices close by; so TCLUG (www.mn-linux.org; www.tclug.org) has
had Installfests at their offices, and I've sat down and had a beer with
Jeremy White himself.
