Thanks a lot for your help Steven, I changed the /etc/modules.conf
according to your example and the alsa-driver is doing a great job now,
my sound is better than ever before ...

Thanks a lot for your time & best regards,

Jean-Paul Van Bylen.

I don't have the answer, but,

    1. from your .abw attachment, the following is interesting:

    Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12
cdrom: This disc doesn?t have any tracks I recognize!
ad1848/cs4248 codec driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen
      1993-1996
ad1848: No ISAPnP cards found, trying standard ones...
MAD16 audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
    CDROM Disabled...

    2. FWIW, http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/?pagename=details&hid=4320 says
your card "should" work in 8.0,

    3. For whatever reason it doesn't (bug? conflict?), you installed alsa,
and http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ says alsa supports your card.

    4. The one "positive" I have to offer is that, if you are going to use
alsa (which very well might circumvent whatever problem 8.0 is causing),
your .abw attachment shows you haven't also modified /etc/modules.conf
accordingly. For that, take a look at
    http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=Opti&card=82C931&chip=82C931&module=opti92x.
to see your /etc/modules.conf should contain lines something like:

             # ALSA portion
             alias char-major-116 snd
             alias snd-card-0 snd-opti92x
    	# module options
    	options snd major=116 cards_limit=1
    	options snd-opti92x index=0

             # OSS/Free portion
             alias char-major-14 soundcore
             alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

    	# card #1
    	alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
    	alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
    	alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
    	alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
    	alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
