Good point. So I tried again. I'm definitely missing something.
Here's my modprobe snd-nm256 output:

================ output from modprobe snd-nm256 ====================
/lib/modules/2.4.18-18.8.0/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o: init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.18-18.8.0/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.18-18.8.0/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18-18.8.0/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o: insmod snd-nm256 failed
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or
IRQ parameters.
      You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

================ end of output ====================

And here's the dmesg output:

================ output from dmesg =====================
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 01:00.1
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:07.2
nm256: no ac97 is found!
  force the driver to load by passing in the module parameter
    force_ac97=1
  or try sb16 or cs423x drivers instead.
NeoMagic 256 audio soundchip not found or device busy

And my /etc/modprobe.conf file is the following:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth0 3c574_cs

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-nm256

options snd-snd-nm256 enable=1 force_ac97=1 irq=5

# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Any advice??

Thanks,
joe
