no sound with console apps

Howdy,

Since upgrading to RH8 from 7.2, console-based sound applications have quit 
working...they just hang until aborted. The apps that fail are 'play' and 
'mpg123.'

I have a via82xx on the MB which works fine under X (using KDE). I'm currently 
using ALSA, but had the same problem with the regular 2.4.X kernel modules.
